Woo hoo did I love to spend money!! Actually I still do but I’m a lot more in control of my spending habits than before.
You could say spending money is another addiction and I certainly was addicted to spending. After being married and “contained” in my 20s when I divorced I was suddenly let loose with money!! Finally there was no husband to tell me I couldn’t spend!!
On one hand this was brilliant!! I felt free, wild and boy did I have some adventures. But on the other hand I was way out of control and was raking up debt on dozens of credit cards, loans and I even remortgaged my house so I could carry on spending.
Well this all came to a sudden halt about 5 years ago. I just couldn’t keep up with my repayments and I had to seek advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau. After much deliberating I decided to declare myself insolvent a couple of years ago, a bold step but the right step in admitting what I did and taking as much responsibility for my past actions.
So where am I now? Well I am much more in control of my spending, yes I admit it, I still have times when I just blow money on shoes and clothes but these times are very rare, lets say probably twice a year.
I have taken alot of time this year really working on the story I tell myself around money and I now firmly believe that I will always have enough money to live a beautiful, calm life with the odd luxurious treat to boot!
I am sure that most of you have your money affairs in order but if you do not then I would love to share this powerful trick I use all the time.
Its called the 24 hour rule. Basically if I see something I want and start to get all excited about it, I have to wait 24 hours to see if I still want it. Then if I do, AND if I have the money then I am allowed to purchase it. This has been not only a life saver for me that stops impulse spending, it has also saved me a ton of money too!
Finally gorgeous, if you are suffering from any money problems you have my utmost love and support and I just urge you to seek advice from an independent source. There is always a way to solve the most horrible problems but we just need to ask for help.
